James F. Pomeroy II Shares Velocity Success Stories

16 Nov

James F. Pomeroy, an  internationally recognized financial expert, philanthropist, and mentor for sports and education, launched Velocity Sports and Education, a group dedicated to helping children succeed in both sports and education.

Satisfied parents and children express their praise for “Coach Jim”–James F. Pomeroy II–better than anyone. Indeed, his organization has helped, in the decade or so since it was founded, thousands of children succeed.

James shares just one of these stories of success:
About a month prior, James F Pomeroy ran into a former Velocity player at a baseball game in Harwich, Cape Cod, Massachusetts. When he saw James, he joined him to watch the game. But after James asked how he was doing since graduating from Velocity, he lowered his head and told James that he had, unfortunately, gone astray during his undergraduate career. He explained to James that he had made poor choices with regards to his partying habits, slacked on his coursework, and failed out, losing the scholarship he had been granted for a D-1 school in New England.

His parents, deeply upset by his immaturity, cut off essentially all financial support to him, taking a “tough love” stance on his upbringing. He also expressed to James his determination to return to school anyway he could. Currently, he was working 3 part-time jobs just to make ends meet in Hartford, Massachusetts.

James was struck by the fact that he took absolute responsibility for his actions. Hitting rock-bottom, he expressed to Pomeroy that he was prepared to go to any lengths to return to college. He explained that he felt he could, in fact, serve as a role model to students should he return, because he could draw from his own life experiences. He would be an asset to any undergraduate team. He now appreciated the value of a college education, and saw it as  a great privilege and opportunity.

Pomeroy was moved by his story, and thus decided he would help him anyway he could. He worked with him for an entire month, arranging interviews for him at Lasalle College located in Newton, Massachusetts.  He met with the baseball coach there, too. Today, he is enrolled at Lessell and is completing his junior year (for one semester, he is on academic probation). If he earns  a B average for the semester, he will be admitted onto the baseball team as both an on-and-off field leader.

In a recent interview with his writer, James F. Pomeroy II shared the following voicemails:

“Jim, this is John Malone.  I know how busy you are, but I just wanted to thank you for the personal interest you have taken in my kid, Jake.  You are a positive role model in his life, from helping us select the best college fit for him, to just going out of your way to step in and make him know that he is important.  Thanks.”

“Jim, this is Donny May.  Thanks for everything you do for me.  Because of you I got a great opportunity at Fordham University in New York and got a great financial package.  Thank you so much for everything, Coach.”

As Robert South, English churchman, had once said, “If there be any truer measure of a man than by what he does, it must be by what he gives.” It is clear that James F. Pomeroy strives to live according to this philosophy.
